With the vacation season just around the corner, your home may be vacant for a few weeks. If you want to go on vacation with a carefree feeling, leave your home securely behind.
Burglars are especially active during the summer period. A busy period for the police, but as a resident you can also make it difficult for burglars. Through this news item we give you some tips to prevent a home burglary.
- The best way to prevent a home burglary is to let someone stay in your house during your vacation. We are not thinking of temporarily renting out your home, but of a person who temporarily looks after your home, such as a family member or close acquaintance. Burglars will see during your absence that the home is occupied, often this is enough to prevent a burglary.
- If your home does remain vacant during your vacation, make sure there are lights on in the evening. If lights are on at night that suggests someone is staying in the home. You would do well to use an automatic light switch and a lamp with LED lights.
- Make sure windows are closed and properly locked. Windows can be secured with thieves' claws and security hinges. Make sure there are good locks on your doors and install anti-intrusion strips if necessary.
- If you have a garden, make sure you have good lighting there as well, possibly with motion sensors.
- Make sure valuable items are properly stored. Leaving valuable items in plain sight can lead to a burglary.
- Store items such as ladders, containers tables and chairs. These types of items are often used to climb onto a roof.
- Provide monitoring. Inform neighbors that you are going on vacation and ask someone to remove the mail and water the plants. A great time to inspect the home.
- Don't hide keys outside the house. Under a doormat, under a flower pot or on a window frame are familiar places to hide a key.
- Not a free tip but definitely one that works, make use of security cameras. Burglars then immediately realize they are being watched. Security cameras are becoming cheaper and are easy to install. This allows you to keep an eye on your home even while on vacation.
- Get a good home contents insurance. If a burglary does occur, it is nice that you can recover costs and damages from the insurance company.
